Adventures in Bottle-Babysitting: Part 2

11 September, 2014

Below is part 2 of our adventures with Bottle Babysitting Kittens for the Animal Humane Society.

Once Kavi and I mastered bottle feeding, it was time for these munchkins to start eating canned food.   Of course, I wanted to feed them Golden Acres meat mixes, but foster agreement from the Animal Humane Society requires us to feed them the food they provide us. My hands became a mess of canned food and milk, I’d cup it in my hand, encouraging them to eat some, and they were stubborn! Eventually, I figured out that if I kept hitting the bowl to get their attention and sat with them, they liked eating what I gave them.

And they grew and grew, seemingly by the day. They figured out how to escape from the bathtub they were living in, so whenever the bathroom door swung open, they were off running! And, they figured out where the Golden Acres Turkey Meat Mix was (that we feed our resident cats), and loved stealing bites of it.

They loved scratching their claws on the kitten post, and climbing it like Godzilla. They’d pounce on each other and had boundless energy. They got more curious and would run and find a hiding place in any room they were in. When I’d call them though, they would come and follow my feet wherever I went. They even tried, many times, to make friends with the resident cats, Golden Acres' official cat-scots, Opal and Bundar, but they were not happy to make their acquaintance.

Scooter’s fur developed into this lovely, soft, medium haired coat. Bella Bandit grew too, and her “Yoda” face disappeared for one that looked much more feline-like.

And then the time came for them to be turned back in. As a Cat Adoption Volunteer at Animal Humane Society, I knew they would get adopted quickly, but still it hurt my heart so much to give them back. I thought of the love of the people who I’ll never meet given to care for our rescue cats, Opal and Bundar, and they too would never find where their foster cats ended up.

I’m happy to report that both Scooter and Bella Bandit were adopted and I trust they are loving life in their forever homes.
